What you need to know about Child Benefit support: a HMRC guide

Life is busier than ever right now, so we want to make sure you’re getting all the support you’re entitled to. Here are some important updates to Child Benefit that you may need to know about:

Child Benefit

To help boost your family budget, the amount you will receive for your first child is increasing from 6 April. Child Benefit is worth £26.05 a week – or £1,354.60 a year – for the eldest, or only, child. The rate for each additional child is £17.25 a week – or £897 a year. There is no limit on the number of children you can claim for. It’s paid into your bank account every four weeks (or weekly in certain circumstances).

Check if you’re eligible

If you’re worried that your income may be too high to get Child Benefit, it may be worth checking again. The amount you can earn before you start paying the High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) is now £60,000. Check how much you could get and claim in the HMRC app or online using the GOV.UK online calculator.

A new digital service is also launching this summer that will give employed parents who are liable for the charge the choice to pay directly through their PAYE tax code, instead of filing a Self Assessment tax return. More information will be available soon on GOV.UK.

Get on it – download the HMRC app

You can view and manage your claim quicky and easily on the HMRC app. This includes viewing payments, proof of entitlement and adding additional children – all without needing to call HMRC.

By downloading the app, sign-in can be even faster with a PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition too – giving you everything you need to know about your Child Benefit claim at your fingertips.
